Rock O' Ages Station by rjcarroll Rock O' Ages Station by rjcarroll
9/2/08 - Rock O' Ages Station, Route 66, Luther, Oklahoma.

Traveling west on Route 66 towards Arcadia, the ruins of The Rock O’ Ages Station, an old stone gas station, can be seen. This station was probably constructed in the late teens or early 1920’s. There was no electricity (all light was generated with kerosene lamps) and gas was dispensed from 55 gallon drums laid on their side in a wooden cradle. You could only buy a cold soda after the ice man had been by and chocolate was sold in the cooler months due to the lack of refrigeration. The station closed when the owner was arrested for counterfeiting $10 bills in a secret back room.

Hmmm... It seems there are flower pots in the window. Is anybody taking care of this place?

I do. Especially because it is a piece of near history that has nothing to do with war. A (mostly) happy piece of history.

Thank you for the additional info! And while I'm at it and being aware that I wrote very few comments to these photos with all the little stories: Some more thanks for not only taking the photos but also gathing all the info. Good Job, indeed!
