11/21/08 - Joshua Tree (Infrared), Joshua Tree National Park, California

The Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) is a monocotyledonous tree native to southwestern North America, in the states of California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada. Confined mostly to the Mojave Desert between 400-1,800 m (2,000-6,000 feet), they thrive in the open grasslands of Queen Valley and Lost Horse Valley in Joshua Tree National Park.

According to legend, Mormon pioneers considered the limbs of the Joshua trees to resemble the upstretched arms of Joshua leading them to the promised land.

Joshua trees are the fucking bomb.

So are dragon blood trees, which you should google if you've never seen. They're fucking trippy.

And I need to stop fucking cursing before I go teach those godsdamned kids next semester. Fuck.

I was staitioned in 29 Palms MCAGCC from 93-95 and drove through the 'Monument' thinking it was a short cut, big mistake!!!!! nice scenario but crap roads!!!!!
:iconrjcarroll:
 I did that on 87 from Winslow to Phoenix and at night nonetheless...I tried to turn on the highbeams when they were already on. I've never been in such darkness and on winding desert roads with the possiblity of seeing elk. Back to JT, looks like the roads may have been resurfaced since you took your detour. I arrived via I10 and got halfway into the park and did not see one joshua tree! Ranger told me they were all on the other side. The next day I went from Indio and up 62. Glad that I went but doubtful I will re-visit. When I was stationed in San Diego in the mid 1980's, we used to refer to it as 29 Stumps. Probably still referred to as that.

Yep! I do work in a greenhouse over the summer, so I get to see all kinds of weird foliage...

At least I'm teaching high school where I'd have a chance of squeezing by with that...do that in K-5 and the kids will go whining to the principal like obscenity is a bad thing.
