1/10/09 - Claypool Tunnel On US 60, Superior, AZ
Built in 1922, The Claypool Tunnel was named for the town of Claypool, approx. 20 miles east.
As the road technology improved, portions of US 60 were re-engineered to eliminate the excessive switchbacks and steep grades. This stretch of US 60 east of Superior was realigned in 1952 allowing traffic to be routed through the new Queen Creek Tunnel. [link] The old alignment, including the Claypool Tunnel, was decommissioned.
Even though The Claypool Tunnel was short by modern standards, it was a major feat of engineering for the time.
