5/31/09 - Along US 89, Ovid, Idaho

The most beautiful abandoned structure I have ever seen!

This was the LDS ward house of Ovid until July 2, 1967 (the Ovid Ward merged with the Liberty Ward so the building was closed). It was built in 1896 at the cost of $3000 with local materials by local carpenters. The central bell tower was struck by lightning and removed in 1904.

Dear God that is beautiful. It's wonderful how, even as it decays, this building has an amazing sense of understated gravitas, dignity and beauty. It's a funny sort of shape - somewhat truncated, full of uncompromising 90 and 45 degree angles, but it just...works. I can't stop looking at it. It's so serene, yet so powerful - it's like the soul of the building itself is making a proud proclamation of the indomitable spirit of the White Anglo-Saxon Protestant frontiersmen who erected it in such a bleak environment.

Yeah...I'm sounding kinda pretentious here.

It's just that this picture is really, really amazing. It's so simple, but it says so much - just like the building itself.

Thanks for faving it! I went pretty far out of my way to photograph this beautiful structure on a cross-country trip. I spent about 45 minutes photographing this from many, many angles with several cameras. I'm am glad this touched you so strongly! Thank you.
